Catching Up with John Edwards

The New Republic has a terrific article out about the National Enquirer and how they got the goods on John Edwards. It's not pretty, I just wish we had real reporters working this hard on real important stories:

"For two weeks, a team of four reporters-including Alan Smith, who broke the Donna Rice scandal-staked out Hunter's OB/GYN office until she was spotted and snapped outside a nearby grocery store on December 12. "The picture you see where she looks like Camilla Parker Bowles took fifteen days," reporter Alan Butterfield, who was at the scene, remembers. "We sat in our car."

Before publishing the photograph on December 19, the Enquirer pressed Edwards to confirm the story, Perel says. Edwards's attorney offered to provide a sworn affidavit that his client hadn't fathered Hunter's child, but, according to two former Edwards staffers, Edwards never signed one. Perel says the paper also offered Edwards the chance to take a polygraph test; if he passed, Perel would kill the story. Edwards declined the offer."

It could have ended there, everybody was covering up pretty good. Then came the incident at the Beverly Hills Hilton. Read the whole article, but amaze yourself with this moment first:

"Shortly after 2 a.m, Hitchen saw McGovern return to the lobby. Expecting Edwards to take the elevator to the basement where he could escape through a rear stairwell, the reporter positioned himself at the bottom of the stairs. Edwards popped out of the elevator and started up the stairs.

Then Hitchen pounced. "Mr. Edwards, Alexander Hitchen, from the National Enquirer. Would you like to say why you were at the hotel this evening to see your mistress Rielle Hunter and your love child?" he asked. Edwards froze and "turned pale," Hitchen remembers. Edwards made a move for the top of the stairs but Butterfield, standing with a photographer, was blocking the exit. "He ducked, tucked, and ran," Butterfield says. The Enquirer reporters ran after him, Hitchen asking questions all the while. "Do you think for the sake of your child, you should admit paternity?" he said.

Edwards said nothing."

Ouch. Here's more from the National Enquirer:

Goodbye John Edwards

I told ya, back on 12/19/07, that the Enquirer was onto something. Now it's out there, he's admitted it.

Who was Edwards to think he could run, when this story has been 'out there' since well before the primaries began? Dude.

I've liked Edwards for the most part during his brief political career. A few of of my first blog posts were about Edwards back when he shone like a meteor, taking his Senate seat to the national stage, contending for two presidential nominations. Now he is gone. Toast. Worm meal. Lower than a crawdad's belly in a sink full of soaking hot seaweed.

At least his wife was in remission at the time?

At least it's not his baby, that we know of, yet?

At least he didn't love her?

Dude? Dude.....

I say this as a joke, but you know there's some truth here:
I think he could have done better than that, I mean it's not like she's super hot, or a brewery heiress or something. Color me disappointed.

3 Hours Left in Iowa....

....and I forecast the winner for the Democrats will be none other than North Carolina's own John Edwards.

Update 1/4: I was wrong. Still a good showing for Edwards, but probably not enough to get him going.

Edwards got special treatment from some notable lefties yesterday:

Michael Moore

Tom Hayden
Ralph Nader

and one today:

Normon Solomon

(I'll link to the articles later, time constraints with my prediction and all) update: Links!

I could be wrong, but something tells me Edwards has the mo'

It will be funny to see how few people choose Hillary as their #2. I guess you're either with her or against her.

Who is this lady?

Read The National Enquirer article to find out.

Yeah, that's right, I'm sourcing the National Enquirer. This kind of thing repulses and captivates me, especially since it's not in the mainstream media (yet)... But search Google for this lady's name....there's a whole other news world online often based on speculation and innuendo. Who can know what is true or not here....that's something the National Enquirer has excelled at exploiting, since way before Al Gore invented the internet. They paved the way for today's bloggers. NQ, I salute you!

Edwards Surge?

I sense a change in the Edwards campaign lately, he seems to have thrown away the shackles of party politics and is really speaking from the heart. Hillary's campaign donation troubles may open a window and hopefully will unravel her campaign as people are reminded of her dealings with Chinese donors, the Lincoln bedroom for rent, Mark Rich pardon, etc.
There is still a lot of time, and hopefully smart Democrats will realize that Hillary is not the right candidate. America deserves better.

BonObama

Back when John Edwards was our Senator, I e-mailed to encourage him to meet with Bono when he was coming to the Hill to see Jesse Helms. To my knowledge, Bono and Edwards only met fairly recently, and I have not seen pictures or anything out there of the Edwards or Obama meetings. Here's an old favorite:

Obama and Bono together? Sounds good to me! I'd like to be a fly on the wall in that room...

Bono seeks Obama's help By Mike Dorning

February 28, 2007

WASHINGTON -- Presidential candidate Barack Obama discussed global issues with U2 singer Bono on Tuesday.

The two met for about a half-hour in the Illinois senator's personal office in the Hart Senate building to talk about the ONE Campaign, a non-profit organization that the Irish rock star helped form to combat AIDS and world poverty, according to Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for Obama.

"Bono was making rounds on the Hill to build support for the ONE campaign. He particularly wanted to meet with Sen. Obama since he's a member of the Foreign Relations Committee and has been active on international poverty and global health issues," LaBolt said.

LaBolt said the two did not discuss particular programs or legislation but "had a general discussion about how foreign assistance to the right programs [anti-poverty, global health] can boost our security and the standing of the U.S. around the world."

JFK, Jr. Thought

Been thinking about the '08 Presidential campaign and here's what I wrote to a friend who asked me about it recently:

"Yeah, I really like Obama, too. He's the kind of guy you can get excited about, and face it, the Hillary machine must be stopped. You know, if JFK Jr's plane had not gone down, he'd have Hillary's Senate seat, and he could be the one we were all excited about (like Obama) and have the political organization/money machine (like Hillary). It's a shame really, 'cause I always kinda thought he would make a great president someday, and we desperately need a great one.

Could Obama be great? Yeah, he could, but we could have had JFK, Jr. Kind of a random thought, but there you go.

Can we get excited about Edwards? I dunno anymore. He's like McCain....both are trying to make their party bases happy by somewhat selling themselves out. Not that there's anything unusual about that, just ask Romney. Edwards also has a hint of used goods from the Kerry debacle... Edwards is not such a fresh face anymore, and he doesn't have much more experience now than when he ran last time. Obama is fresher and his chalkboard empty....people are throwing in with him without knowing where he stands on many things, and that's a great benefit to him. Speaking ability goes a long way, just ask Reagan, and Obama is amazing....Edwards may be a bit too much (gulp)... Jimmy Carter. I'm not really thinking about it much though! ;-P Still got an Edwards tag on my blog...for now..."

Not sure if this has been discussed, but check out what happens to "Obama" on my spell checker in Outlook Express:

It's a vast right wing conspiracy, I say. Or is it left wing? Rush Limbaugh probably has something to do with this!

Bono, Gore & Edwards Slay Hillary

The new Alternet poll has some interesting results:

"Gore, whose popularity appears to be growing with the success of his documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, received 35 percent of the vote, followed by Senator Russ Feingold at 20 percent and former vice presidential candidate John Edwards at 11 percent. Wesley Clark received 4 percent, and John Kerry and Mark Warner 2 percent.

The big surprise in the survey is that Senator Hillary Clinton, whom many in the corporate media suggest is the front runner for the nomination, only received 7 percent of the vote. ...

...In other poll categories, Bono topped the charts as Most Effective Celebrity with 35 percent, followed by George Clooney at 20 percent. Susan Sarandon nipped her partner Tim Robbins 7 percent to 5 percent while the Dixie Chicks received 6 percent of the vote."

I still like Edwards.

Poverty Champion(s)

"These folks need a champion--and not just me. They need you. You can make ending poverty... the cause of your generation. It's the right thing to do. This is not about charity--it's about justice!"

Sounds like Bono

"I never thought I'd see this many kids coming to listen to a speech about poverty,"

Sounds like someone talking about Bono

"He's raised poverty to a presidential-level conversation for the first time in forty years,...You've got to give him credit for that. And given the shallowness of his experience... the way he vaulted right over the lower rungs of the ladder--it's an amazing story."

Sounds like Bono again, right? Not this time. This time we're talking about an American: John Edwards. And I like what Edwards has to say here:

Lesson One: Stop thinking small. "I think in our effort to be elected, we've become minimalists, tinkering around the edges--Our tax cut is better than yours, or, We'll give you smaller class sizes," he says. "That's not what the country wants. We've got to give the American people something big and important to be unified by. Republicans use big things to divide America. I think we can use big things to unite America."

Sound familiar?

Misunderestimated Again

Simple but Effective - Why you keep losing to this idiot. By William Saletan: "12:01 a.m. PT: Sigh. I really didn't want to have to write this."

I didn't want to have to read it. Those exit polls had me thinking Kerry looked like he was in good shape, so it's just more salt in the wound. Congrats Karl Rove, you've done PT Barnum proud.

Saletan thinks Bush won with "simplicity", and he's mostly right, but I think he pulled off the marketing trick called "branding". He repeats the same things and creates his brand: steadfast, strong, flag-draped, in a ray of light from God, he's like the Marlboro Man. Even for people who know that Marlboros are bad for your health, there's just something about that Marlboro Man that you trust, he seems to be the essence of "America". People don't want to vote against "America", and a lot of Bush support comes from this kind of view. I don't agree, in fact, I am more concerned for the future of our country than I've ever been.

Saletan thinks Dems should rally around Edwards in '08, but if McCain runs, nobody can beat him. And if the Dems couldn't beat this president, with his 4 year track record, I don't have much hope that the Democrats can ever get back in the White House. I'll take McCain over most any Democrat, I just wish we'd elected McCain last night or 4 years ago.

Almost everybody I voted for lost, including all of my endorsements. It's a sad day for me...

Edwards or Cheney?

edwardsorcheney, originally uploaded by watts4u2.

He does make a compelling impression

Go long!

Go long!, originally uploaded by watts4u2.

I've been an Edwards fan all along, even though I don't always agree with him.

"Hope is on the way!"

Some of my Republican friends may be surprised, but I'll be voting for Kerry/Edwards come November.
