The Edge's Fringe Number: e

atu2 blog pointed me toward this interesting article about The Edge's "sound" and a transcendental number: e

Derek White ends his article "U2's Natural Logarhythm: Exponential Decay in the Delay of The Edge's Guitar":
"And the question still remains as to "why e?" In the case of the plants, the golden ratio allows them to optimally space leaves on an axis for maximum sun exposure. There is a physical reason. But why the delay ratio of e sounds most appealing, still remains to be determined. I am not sure I want to know."
About "e", from Wikipedia:

The number e is irrational; it is not a ratio of integers. Furthermore, it is transcendental; it is not a root of any non-zero polynomial with rational coefficients. The numerical value of e truncated to 40 decimal places is:

2.7182818284590452353602874713526624977572...

What does all this mean, Walter? Do you know that Peter and Fauxlivia have U2 concert tickets? Hmmmmm....

The Edge on The Election

"The Edge seemed more interested in talking about the U.S. presidential race. Wondering whether "Americans really are ready for a black president," The Edge said he hoped so, but predicted "it's going to be very, very close ... perhaps as close as the one in 2000." Whatever the outcome, The Edge, like virtually every European I met the past two weeks, is convinced either Barack Obama or John McCain will greatly improve America's standing on the world stage."

Edge on Ringtones

Stuck in a Moment, originally uploaded by dreadfuldan.

Short-form composers wanted - The Boston Globe: "U2's The Edge disagrees, contending that he sometimes decides whether he will like or dislike a person according to how their phone rings. Among his turnoffs: the theme from ''Swan Lake.'

''Music you do in private,' he says by phone. ''But ring tones become a public display, like a pair or sneakers or a T-shirt. People are going to use ring tones as a real expression of what they're about.'"

My Zooropa ringtone went off in church during my niece's Baptism...The Edge would have been so proud.
